The Rongai Route - Your Path to Uhuru Peak
The Rongai Route is the only route approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It's the driest route on the mountain, making it ideal for climbing during the rainy seasons when southern routes are wet. The route offers a true wilderness experience with fewer climbers and a gentler gradient. You may see elephant and buffalo in the lower forests. Descent is via the Marangu Route, providing variety.
This 7-day expedition takes you through diverse ecological zones, from rainforest to alpine desert, culminating at Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.
Day-by-Day Ascent
6 days to the Roof of Africa via Rongai Route
Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp
Drive to the remote Nalemuru Gate on Kilimanjaro's northern slope near the Kenyan border. Trek through cultivated farmland and pine forest, gradually entering natural forest. This quiet approach sees few other climbers. Camp at Simba Camp with views towards Kenya.
Simba Camp to Second Cave
Continue through the forest and emerge into moorland. The northern slopes are drier with different vegetation than southern routes. Pass First Cave and continue to Second Cave camp. Views of Mawenzi become increasingly dramatic. Remote wilderness with few other trekkers.
Second Cave to Kikelelwa Cave
Gradual ascent across high moorland with stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The landscape becomes more barren as altitude increases. Pass unique volcanic formations and lava flows. Kikelelwa Cave offers sheltered camping in an ancient lava tube.
Kikelelwa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn
Trek toward the dramatic Mawenzi peak, Kilimanjaro's second summit. The trail traverses alpine desert before descending into Mawenzi Tarn, a stunning alpine lake at the base of the jagged Mawenzi spires. Optional afternoon acclimatization hike.
The highest point in Africa
Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut & Summit
Cross the lunar saddle to reach Kibo Hut. Rest during the afternoon and eat early dinner. Depart at midnight for the summit push via Gilman's Point. Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise. Descend to Horombo Hut on the Marangu route.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Final descent via the Marangu route through moorland and rainforest. The lush forest is a stark contrast to yesterday's arctic summit. Arrive at Marangu Gate for certificates and celebration. Transfer to Moshi.
