The Marangu Route - Your Path to Uhuru Peak
The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro's oldest and most established route, and the only one offering hut accommodation instead of camping. Its gentler gradient makes it appear "easier," though this is misleading as the shorter duration provides less acclimatization time. The route approaches from the southeast, offering beautiful forest trails and the unique experience of sleeping in mountain huts with beds, mattresses, and dining halls.
This 6-day expedition takes you through diverse ecological zones, from rainforest to alpine desert, culminating at Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Begin at Marangu Gate (1,860m) with registration and final preparations. The well-maintained trail winds through beautiful montane forest, home to blue monkeys and diverse birdlife. Pass the Maundi Crater viewpoint. Arrive at Mandara Hut, a cluster of wooden A-frame cabins with dormitory-style accommodation.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the forest and enter the heath zone with giant heathers and stunning views of Mawenzi peak. The landscape opens up dramatically as you traverse moorland. Horombo Hut (3,720m) offers the only hut accommodation on any Kilimanjaro route above 3,000m. Spectacular sunset views over the Kenyan plains.
Acclimatization Day at Horombo
Essential acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. Take day hikes to Zebra Rock or Mawenzi Tarn for altitude exposure. The imposing Mawenzi peak towers nearby. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the push to high camp. This extra day significantly improves summit success rates.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Trek across the lunar landscape of the alpine desert, known as 'The Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Vegetation becomes sparse as altitude increases. Reach Kibo Hut (4,703m) in the early afternoon. Rest and eat early dinner before the midnight summit attempt.

Summit Day: Kibo to Uhuru Peak
Depart at midnight for the summit push. Climb through scree and switchbacks in darkness. Reach Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim at sunrise. Continue around the crater to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa! Descend to Horombo Hut for well-deserved rest.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Final descent retracing the route through moorland and forest. The journey down reveals details missed on the way up. Arrive at Marangu Gate by midday. Receive your summit certificate and celebrate with your crew before transfer to Moshi.
