The Northern Circuit - Your Path to Uhuru Peak
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's longest and most comprehensive route, circumnavigating the mountain's northern slopes. Starting from Lemosho Gate, it traverses the quiet northern wilderness before ascending via Barafu. At 9 days, it provides the best acclimatization and highest success rates. The northern traverse offers stunning views of Kenya, pristine wilderness, and virtually no other climbers for several days.
This 9-day expedition takes you through diverse ecological zones, from rainforest to alpine desert, culminating at Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.
Day-by-Day Ascent
9 days to the Roof of Africa via Northern Circuit
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Drive to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western side. Complete registration then continue to the Lemosho trailhead at 2,100m. Trek through pristine montane forest, home to black and white colobus monkeys and abundant birdlife. This remote western approach sees very few climbers.
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Continue through the forest before emerging into the heath zone. Giant heathers and wild flowers line the path. Climb steadily through moorland with expanding views of Kibo. Shira Ridge appears ahead. Camp on the edge of the magnificent Shira Plateau with sunset views.
Shira 1 to Moir Hut
Cross the spectacular Shira Plateau toward Moir Hut. The vast caldera hosts unique high-altitude plant life including giant lobelias and groundsels. This less-traveled route diverges from the standard Lemosho path. Camp at remote Moir Hut with stunning views.
Moir Hut - Acclimatization Day
Important acclimatization day exploring the Lent Hills. Take day hikes to higher altitudes for exposure, then return to sleep at Moir Hut. This critical 'climb high, sleep low' strategy significantly improves summit success rates. Optional exploration of unique volcanic features.
Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
Begin the northern circuit traverse, the defining feature of this route. Trek through pristine wilderness on Kilimanjaro's quiet northern slopes. Views extend into Kenya. Very few climbers use this section. Camp at remote Buffalo Camp.
Buffalo Camp to Third Cave
Continue the northern traverse with spectacular views. The trail crosses several ravines and dry river valleys. This remote section offers complete wilderness immersion. Arrive at Third Cave camp, used primarily by Northern Circuit climbers.
Third Cave to School Hut
Ascend toward the main summit route. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you approach the arctic zone. Join the standard route at School Hut, a strategic high camp position. Rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
The highest point in Africa
Summit Day: School Hut to Uhuru Peak
Depart at midnight for the final ascent. The route passes through scree and switchbacks to reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim. Continue around the crater past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - Africa's highest point! Descend all the way to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The humid forest teems with life - a stark contrast to yesterday's barren summit. Sign out at the gate and receive your well-earned summit certificate. Celebrate this extraordinary achievement with your crew.
